When I first heard of science, as a mere fairykin—I thought it was cute. I thought it was a kind of servant to you mortals, so you could have more time to play poker and write poems and figure out ways of staying out of trouble. But when I grew up, I saw that far from being your butler and handyman, it was your executioner. You invent the wheel—CRUNCH!—people get run over; you discover electricity? BZZT! The electric chair! You split atoms? BOOM! Cities wiped out! See what I mean?

Fairy 589 from “The Curse of 589” broadcast in March 1997 on NPR
